What is voice over IP?
Instead of using a physical landline such as BT or Cable and Wireless, Voice Over IP or VoIP works by using your existing broadband connection. That’s why it’s so much cheaper.
You use VoIP just like you use the phone service you’ve got now. Once you’re set up, you carry on making and receiving calls just like you did before. Just pick up the phone, no headsets required, wait for the dialling tone, and then punch in the number. The only difference you’ll see will be in your bills, which will be much lower.
VoIP is a set of technologies that enable voice calls to be carried over the Internet (or other networks designed for data), rather than the traditional telephone landline system—the Public Switched Telephone Network, or PSTN. VoIP represents a significant change in telecommunications.
VoIP technology offers opportunities for the development of new applications and digital services and means that you are making your telephone system ready for new features and future services.
Calls over the traditional fixed line telephone network are metered, so the user pays for the amount of time taken by their call. VoIP calls are not metered, the user pays a set up fee for their Internet service and their VoIP service and can then use the Internet to get other users on the same VoIp service, or pay a small fee to call users on other VoIP services or on the fixed line telephone network.
