UK Broadband speeds up 22% in 2009

A recent survey has indicated that British Broadband speeds surfing speeds increased by over a fifth during 2009.

The average UK Internet connection is 22% faster than it was the year before.

The recent survey used data from thousands of user speed tests and concluded that the the average broadband connection ran at 3.7Mbps the previous year, in 2009 that figure had increased to 4.5Mbps.

The fastest provider was Virgin Media, which clocked up an average speed of 7.4Mbps by its users.

And the slowest? AOL, with barely a smidge over the 2Mbps mark

In the future, the UK’s internet service providers may have to start to advertise average broadband speeds instead of simply advertising a service as “Up To”, according to the broadband comparison site top10broadband.

In a recent report from the regulator Ofcom, it was found that on average the speeds obtained by broadband users are only around fifty seven per cent of those advertised by the ISPs.

With the introduction of next gen broadband, speeds in the UK vary from .5 Mbps up to 100 Mbps.

This variance is dependent on where the broadband user lives and not on how much they pay.  A change such as this would assist the broadband consumer in making better choices when it comes to selecting broadband supplier.

However, it is anticipated that Broadband speeds will continue to increase in the UK as BT rolls out it’s 21st Century Network, which will upgrade their infrastructure throught the whole of the UK.  The BT 21st Century Network will be enabled to cover 60% of the UK’s population by April 2010 and offer complete UK coverage may not come until 2012.  The continued roll out of BT’s 21st Centuury Network will enable it to resell these faster broadband services to a number of other broadband providers and allow faster broadband speeds.
